Battle at the Havens at Sirion

The Third Kinslaying

First age 532

When Brithombar and Eglarest fell in 473 and the realm of Cirdan and the Falas-Elves was overrun by the hordes of Morgoth the escaping Elves sailed to the Bay of Balar and established a refugee at the Mouth of Sirion and upon the Isle of Balar. In 495 when Nargothrond fell, those few who may have escaped the Battle of Tum-Halad sought the Havens at Sirion or went into the guarded realm of Doriath. The next disasters to befall the Elves in 503 was the slaying of Thingol in Doriath by the Dwarves, the departure of Melian, and the final ruin of the realm in 507 with the Second Kinslaying, when the sons of Fëanor attacked Dior. Elwing fled to the Havens at Sirion, aided by faithful Elves, and with her was brought the Nauglamir with the Silmaril. In 510 Gondolin fell, but Tuor, Idril, their son Eärendil and surviving Elves made their way to the Havens and in a few years a dwelling there arose and became the last safe refugee for the Elves. However, Maedhros, Maglor, Amrod and Amras, sons of Fëanor, learned of the uprising of the Havens and of the Silmaril. Yet, for 15 years they kept their peace. But torment fell upon them as a result of their unfulfilled oath, and 5 years later, in 532, they attacked the Havens. At this time Eärendil was Lord of the Havens and Elwing was his wife, and their children, Elros and Elrond, were 4 years old. Eärendil was upon one of his journeys in Vingilot, when the brethren made their assault upon them unexpectedly, but they fought back fiercely. Amrod and Amras were slain but they could not stem the tide.

Cirdan and Gil-Galad came to the rescue of the Havens from the Isle of Balar, when they heard of the assault, but they were too late in their rescue, save for those who had managed to escaped the onslaught in time. Elrond and Elros were caught by Maedhros and Maglor, and the Havens were destroyed. However, Elwing and the Silmaril could not be found. She had thrown herself into the sea and carried the Silmaril away with her.
