Oropher

Son of ?.

Born in ?. Died in S.A.3434.

Father of Thranduil. Wife unknown.

2 Age.

S.A. 40-500. Oropher was of Sindarin origin. His realm was in Mirkwood, before the building of Barad-Dûr and the rising of the Necromancer at Dol Guldur, and his realm extended into the woods surrounding the Lonely Mountain. Long before the Elves of this realm had migrated from the South near the Mouth of Anduin and Belfalas and they were kin and neighbours of the Elves in Loth-Lórien but they had dwelt in Mirkwood East of Anduin around Dol Guldur. Oropher had in the Second age withdrawn Northward beyond the Gladden Fields of several reasons. One was the increasing population of the Dwarves in Moria .

S.A.500 - 1100. After the rising of the Necromancer Oropher moved once more North, This time to the Western glens of Emyn Duir beyond the Old Forest Road.

S.A.1350/1400 - 1981. But he also resented the the intrusion of Galadriel and Celeborn into Lórien. Yet there was nothing to fear between the realms and there was constantly intercourse between the people.

S.A.3430 - 3434. Oropher knew that peace would not be a possibility unless Sauron was destroyed and when the Last Alliance was called he assempled a great army of his numerous people and he led his host to battle. Though their were hardy and valiant they were ill-equipped compared with the Elves of the West and Oropher were selfwilled and not disposed to place himself under the suprime command of Gil-Galad. Thus at arrival at Dagorlad he rushed forward at the head of his most doughty warriors before the signal for advance was given. The outcome was that he was cut off from the main host and driven into the Dead Marches were he and most of his army was slain.
