Making of the Lamps

In the Valian Year 1500 in the Days before Days the Valar had need of light; Yavanna`s devising of seeds needed light to grow and have life and therefore Aulë wrought two great lamps, one as of silver and one as of gold and they were named Illuin and Ormal and Varda filled them with hallowed fire. When full wrought in V.Y.1900 they were set upon mighty pillars; *Helkar and Ringil, as mountains in the midst of Arda one to the North (Illuin.) and one to the South ( Ormal.).

Destruction of the Lamps.: In a time of feast upon Almaren, fearing no evil, ( V.Y.3400 ) the Valar were not aware of Melkor passing over the Walls of the Night, filled with hate being jealous of the work of his peers Melkor began the delving of Utumno and Arda was marred and living things became sick and rotted or were corrupted. Now the Valar knew that Melkor was at work and they sought for his hiding-place but Melkor struck the first blow and he assailed the two lamps ( V.Y.3450 ) and cast down their pillars and the seas arose in tumult and when the fire of the lamps was spilled destroying flames was poured out over the Earth and the shape of Arda was changed. ( Mr.)

*Those pillars Helkar in the South and Ringil in North ( not mentioned by name and who made them in Sil.) was made by Melkor. Aulë persuaded him to build two towers with the purpose to set two mighty lamps upon them and Melkor made them and said they were of an imperishable substance but he lied and made them in ice. The two towers shone like pale blue crystal and were very tall, they reached even to the stars. ( Lt1.)
