The Two Trees
Telperion and Laurelin was kindled by Yavanna and Nienna upon Ezellohar in Valinor in Aman in the Valian year 3500. "And Yavanna sat there long upon the green and sang a song of power, in which was set all her thought of things that grow in the earth. but Nienna thought in silence and watered the mould with tears. In that time all the Valar were gathered together to hear the song of Yavanna, and they sat silent upon there thrones of council at Máhanaxar. And as they watched upon the mound there came forth two slender shoots, and silence was all over the world in that hour, and under song of Yavanna the saplings grew and became fair and tall and came to flower, and thus there awoke in the world the two trees of Valinor. Of all things which Yavanna made they have most renown, and about there fate all the tales of the Eldar days are woven." (Sil.)
One had dark green leafs which was glittering like silver underneath and from his flowers fell dew which shined like silver, this was Telperion. The other had light green leafs with borders like gold, she had flowers like golden flames like shinning horns and they poured a golden rain on the ground, this was Laurelin. From the two trees came a gush of light and each tree had a cyclus of 7 hours from nothing to full bloom and back to rest, each tree starting one hour before the other finished. Telperion was the elder of the two trees and came first to full stature and to bloom while Laurelin was the youngest. ( Sil ) From those trees there came a great light and Valinor was filled with it and the bliss of Valinor was increased for the light of the trees was holy and of great power so whatever was good or lovely or of worth in that light its loveliness and its worth was fully revealed and all that walked in the light were glad at heart. The dew from Telperion and the rain from Laurelin there was spilled on the ground endured long and it was taken into the air and the earth and enriched it with its light and Varda hoarded great wats of it like shining lakes.
