Glamdring

Foe-hammer.

Beater.

The sword was made in the First age by Elven smiths in Gondolin for Turgon. Glamdring was white and gold and was set in an ivory sheath. How it came to the troll-cave of Bert, Tom and William, the three trolls, where Gandalf found it in the Third Age; nothing is said. But early legends of the First age tells how the ruins of Gondolin was searched by roving bands. Perhaps some of these found the sword and carried it away.

The reputation of Glamdring was fearsome in the Third age which tells it must have been even more in the First since it was remembered through two ages. the fact Glamdring survived the long ages between the fall of Gondolin and the finding of it in a troll-cave in the Third age tells a lot of the skills of the Elven smiths of Gondolin.

1 Age.

F.A. 472. Turgon wore Glamdring in the Battle of Unnumbered Tears.

3 Age.

T.A. 2941. It was recovered from a troll-cave by Gandalf and brought to Rivendell where it was identified by Elrond. Gandalf used Glamdring through the rest of his time in Middle-earth.
