Ringil
The sword of Fingolfin, glimmering like ice and silver, grey cold and deadly.
The name of the sword itself Ringil from Quenya Ringe=Cold. Ringil, without being able to fully solve the name may mean Cold Flame as in Narsil meaning Red Flame.
Exactly who made it is not revealed but one may think it was Fingolfin himself. In any case Ringil must have been a terrible sword in the same weapon-category as Andúril / Narsil, Glamdring, Dramborleg or most likely higher. These weapons were made after the Noldor had left Aman and resided in Middle-earth but Ringil was a sword made in Aman under the bliss of the Gods by the Noldor under direct influence of the skill of Aulë.
What became of Ringil after Fingolfin`s death is not told. He died with it but if it was destroyed or left or taken into the pits of Angband or brought with him to his tomb in the Encircling Mountains nothing is said.
Valian Years of the Trees.
V.Y.t.1400-1495. The Noldor began making weapons and we may believe Ringil was made in these years. The Elves had not made or thought about weapons before the Valian Year of the Trees 1400 when Melkor / Morgoth was released and began to tell the Elves about weapons "And when Melkor saw that these lies were smouldering, and that pride and anger were awake among the Noldor, he spoke to them concerning weapons; and in that time the Noldor began the smithying of swords and axes and spears" In year 1490 Melkor left Aman and sought out Ungoliant and it may be thought, at this time, that Ringil had been made.
1 Age.
There would be many other times Ringil was used in battle such as in the First Kinslaying at Alqualondë, at the arrival to Middle-earth, in the Glorious Battle and in the Battle of Sudden Flame but this is the only time it is directly mentioned by name.
F.A.456. Seven times wounded Fingolfin Morgoth with Ringil during their combat and when Fingolfin finally grew tired and Morgoth set his foot upon his neck Fingolfin with a last stroke of Ringil hewed the foot that Morgoth became halt ever after.
