T.A.2941. Bert, William, and Tom, caught Bilbo in Trollshaws when Bilbo encountered them upon his great journey to the Lonely Mountain. When Bilbo tried to steal William's purse from his pocket, the magical purse cried out and revealed him so Bilbo was caught. When the twelve Dwarves accompanying Bilbo tried to find and help Bilbo, they were caught too. Yet before the Trolls could decide what to do with their catch, Gandalf played a trick on them and they were trapped in the rising Sun and turned to stone.

The swords Orcrist, Glamdring and Sting was found by Bilbo, Thorin II and Gandalf, in the cave of Bert, Tom and William. They were, in Imladris, identified as swords of Gondolin.

T.A.3018. October. Bert was the Troll with the bird's nest behind his ear when the four Hobbits Meriadoc, Peregrin, Sam, Frodo and Dúnedain Aragorn II passed by in their flight to the Ford of Bruinen.
