The Second of Melkors Fortresses. Not far from the North-Western shores at the edge of Ered Engrin made Melkor Angband; a fortress and armoury to resist the assault that might come from Aman, and he assigned that to Sauron to command, but during the first war of the Valar Angband was laid nearly waste. Though the Valar did not find all the pits and vaults and deep benieth the Earth did Sauron and servants and Balrogs of Melkor hide. After Melkors escape from Aman and the destruktion of the two trees Telperion and Laurelin he returned to Angband and delved anew his vaults and dungeons and infront of Angband he raised Thangorodrim upon Ard-Galen. From the Lays of Beleriand we know a little of how Angband looked; It was dark and glooming place where a burning wind blew through the labyrinthine corridors leading down to the roots of the mountains. Foul vapours came up from gaping holes and there was a thounderous noice from the forges and cries of pain from the tormented captives. Along the corners of the corridors huge stone carven throlls and shapes in likening of mortals were hewn in mockery of the living. The thronehall of Morgoth was lit with fire and mirrored in the brazen floor, smoke and steam waved up towards the high unseen roof which was upheld by pillars who tovered like trees, shaped and carven like devils. "The pillars, reared like monstrous shores to bear earth`s overwhelming floors, were devil-carven, shaped with skill such as unholy dreams doth fill : they towered like trees into the air, whose trunks are rooted in dispear, whose shade is death, whose fruit is bane, whose boughs like serpents writhe in pain." Here in the thronehall was Morgoth`s seat and before the seat was doomed lying dying upon the floor. About Morgoth was Balrogs and werewolves seated and on walls and floors were bats.

Angband was finaly destroyed in the War of the Wrath.
