The Gladden Fields. In the elder days Gladden Fields were a lake formed in a deep 27 Mile long depression into which Anduin poured from its 280 Miles long course from the North. It was wider at the Western side for the Eastern side was steeper up to the feet of of the long slopes of Mirkwood. From Hithaeglir in West came the fast river Gladden and mingled with the water of Anduin. But in later days the lake had become a great marsh through which the river wandered in a wilderness of islets and wide beds of reed and rush, and armies of yellow iris that grew taller than a man and gave the name to the region and to the river Gladden ( Sír Ninglor ) At the Eastern side the lake and marsh had receded and there were now wide flats, grown with grass and small rushes, on which men could walk.
